Sulfates and Valley System in Melas Chasma Basin
This HiRISE DTM shows some unusual light-toned material and valleys along some hills in Melas Chasma. The colored image on the left (a) has contours spaced at 5 meter intervals with the colors indicating different elevations (red is high, purple is low). The image on the right (b) is a perspective view of the same area.

From the DTM, we can clearly see that the light-toned unit drapes the hills and therefore was emplaced after the hills has formed. Spectral information from the CRISM instrument reveals that the light-toned material is hydrated (i.e., contains water). The valleys seen along the hills also indicate that water once flowed here but they formed before the light-toned unit, suggesting perhaps several episodes of aqueous activity in this region.
