Inverted Valleys near Juventae Chasma
Located in southwestern Lunae Planum, the site of these two images used to create a DTM is immediately north of Juventae Chasma. This location is noteworthy for landforms interpreted as inverted valleys where the former valley floor are now preserved as ridges.

Landscape inversion occurs in cases where a former topographic low is more resistant to erosion than the valley walls. This can occur due to chemical cementation, armoring by large clasts, or infilling the valley with a material, such as basalt. In this case, the ridges mark the former locations of water erosion flowing as streams in the distant past on Mars.

Erosion, probably by wind, stripped away the valley walls and the former flow paths are preferentially preserved as ridges. These ridges are most prevalent in the center of the image, where they trend north-south. This location has a complicated history; the inverted valleys were later buried by a mantle material, which is most obvious in the lower third of the image as a pitted surface.

This DTM is useful for scientists to map out the extent of various materials at different elevations to reconstruct the sequence of geologic events that occurred here. In addition, the DTM can be used to measure ridge slope, a parameter that is critical for modeling the former water flow conditions.
