Springtime For Avalanches

HiRISE has been conducting a survey of polar scarps where several dust avalanches were caught in action in the previous Mars year. The first new avalanche found by this campaign can be seen in the images from HiRISE observation ESP_016228_2650.

Questions remain about how these dust avalanches are triggered, though it is believed to be related to the spring warming of CO2. You can find out more in Patrick Russell’s caption for HiRISE observation PSP_007338_2640.

The perspective is confusing me. Are we looking down a cliff or across a horizon. I did not know about this project and am very glad I found it.

It is down a very, very steep cliff.

It is pictures like these that can inspire the individual to accept the challenges that are before us. To strive to be more then we are at this moment and to achieve what is currently considered impossible. Going to the moon was considered absurd but the dream was there and achieved against the odds in less then nine years.

We should not stand by while the current political administration kills the future of space exploration by this country with the swipe of a pen. We pay their salaries, they work for us, they are only gods, kings, queens, baron robbers if we allow them to be so.

This is so awesome! What a time to be alive! I want everyone to experience this feeling! Great work and a big pat on the back to everyone involved in bringing these images to us.

I agree with Dexter in that the vision of great accomplishments is necessary and must come from our leaders. It is a sad commentary that todays greatest accomplishments are thought to be feeding ourselves and protecting our families from societies’ cancers. Is all hope gone for an enlightened humanity?

Many great achievements have been under the banner of government. We need a clear vision of advancement for all. By aspiring to greater purpose a leader could unite the world. A more united world could share the truths about the human situation. Many of our problems would vanish if we could divert resources to building rather than destroying. Weapons exist to kill and destroy, they do not protect you. (he who lives by the sword …) PS Make space (past Lagrange) a weapons free zone.

I thought it was caused by severe pressure not due to warming. That is an incredible picture and a lucky one at that. You could have waited forever to get that shot. Very cool- thx for sharing
